Upcoming: Peter Hurd will talk about Evolutionary Computing. Thursday, October 16th, 2008, 7pm in Votey 367. Free food.

Welcome to the Computer Science Student Association (CSSA) Hacker Portal. CSSA is the definitive student run computing association at the University of Vermont. The CSSA consists of an eclectic group of computer hackers (both UVM undergraduate and graduate students) with varying levels of knowledge whom share a firey interest for all things technological, computational, and geeky. Non-members who wish to join the CSSA can expect to learn all about the wide world of GNU Linux, programming languages, hardware, computer theory, and most importantly -- how Computer Science can be used to offer practical solutions to problems you might not even consider... Well, computer problems. If you attend a CSSA gathering, do not expect to be intimidated. The goal of our association is to spread knowldge that one might not neccesarily get in class and or help one another to learn tasks they wouldn't be able to accomplish on their own. So if you are a die hard hacker of the old school, a wizard with magical powers, or just student who likes geeky movies, tech talks, hanging out with friends, and eating free pizza: The CSSA is for you.

Free CSSA Annual Hacker BBQ?

The answer: yes, be there. The date is coming soon.

Where can you find us?

Someone is almost always at the UVM Hacker Lab at Votey Hall Rm. 252. Sometimes we can be found waving to you in the halls of Votey. On occasion we hold meetings at Votey Rm. 367.

What are meetings like?

Meetings are pretty relaxed. Some meetings are structured with tech talks, awesome movies, and free food. Others are merely spur of the moment discussions about current technology. In addition to informational exchange, sometimes we just like hanging out or working on computer programs for the student body. Mostly we recursively loop through the process of learning to hack and hack to learn. Check our site for seminars and other hack-tastic events.

I don't know anything about computers?

The CSSA was formed because a lot of students wanted to mess around with a discipline of study they enjoyed. That doesn't mean everyone KNOWS what they're doing. If you like computers, stop by the Hacker Lab. We're happy to teach, answer questions, or give you the overview. You may just want to come to the tech talks / movie nights to pick up some free food and hang around students who know how to keep it real (geeky). Besides, we love questions and comments -- even if they're embaressingly (trust me, everyone's said them).

You guys are geeks. I would never attend one of your meetings?

First, who says we're all guy!? Secondly, are you asking us if you would never attend one meeting? Thirdly -- fine. We're going to write binary behind you back and append zeros to our salary. Who's el oh eling now? Not us. The CSSA is an EL OH EL free zone. A lot of things are free here... Like our time, our pizza, our ideas, and our software.
