-- Introduction --
The 2003 Design TASC (Technology and Science
Connection) Competition is the 13th running
of an annual contest organized by UVM's College
of Engineering and Mathematics for high schools
in Vermont and for high schools in states
that border Vermont located in New Hampshire,
New York and Massachusetts. The purpose of
this contest is to give teams of high school
students the challenge and satisfaction of
designing, building, and testing a device
to perform a specified task. The essence
of engineering design is to connect the principles
of science with available technologies to
solve real problems. Thus, the design "TASC"
of each team is to create a technological
solution to the problem described in this
document.
Your team's mission is to design, build,
and operate a profitable
transportation system for passengers traveling
to and from four different
stations. You will be modeling an engineering
project so you will be faced
with obstacles engineers face. State and
Local building codes, passenger
safety, environmental impact, and cost effective
design are very important.
Safe and convenient transportation is a goal
that passengers will pay for.
Automation, alternative energy usage, and
low energy consumption are goals
that will lower your operating expenses.
