Abstract:

The vision of a Semantic Web has recently drawn considerable attention, both from academia and industry. Ontologies   provide the Semantic Web with a common understanding of the basic   concepts and are useful for annotating Web pages.  Web ontology language OWL emerged as a prime language for defining, integrating, and maintaining ontologies. In this presentation I shall present Growl- a graphic framework for visualization, browsing and editing of OWL ontologies. Growl is an effort to reconcile modern ontology languages with old Semantic Network philosophy. The discussion will be focused on abstract syntax and semantics of OWL and the relation of OWL to various paradigm of knowledge representation – Frames, Description Logics and Semantic Networks. In addition, I shall briefly discuss the problems pertained to persistent storage and query of OWL ontologies.
