  • OFFICE HOURS: MWF 10:30-11:30 MWF and any time by appointment

  • TEXT: Calculus Early Transcendentals, 6th edition, by Stewart

The course will cover most of the material from Chapters 6-11.

  • GRADING: There will be weekly homework assignments, weekly quizzes, weekly labs, two mid-term exams (Tuesday, February 10 and Tuesday, March 24) and a final exam (8 a.m. - 11 a.m., Friday, May 8, 102 Perkins). Your course grade will be the better grade of the two grades computed as follows:
    1. 10% quizzes (worst two quiz grades discounted)
      10% lab assignments
      40% mid-term exams
      40% final exam
    2. final exam grade.

While the assigned homework problems will not be collected, the quizzes will be based on the homework assignments (usually to the extent of being actual homework problems).

There will be NO MAKE-UP EXAMS. If you must miss an exam or a quiz for legitimate reasons (and, with extremely rare exceptions based on compelling circumstances, with prior notification) your grade will be determined on the basis of your remaining work. In all cases, if at any time you feel your grade does not adequately reflect your performance in class, please see me.

The computer labs will be on Tuesdays and the associated exercises are to be submitted no later than the beginning of class on the following Friday.

  • COMPUTERS: If you do not already have one, you will be given an account on the CEMS computer network, providing access to the Mathematica software package installed on all computers in labs in Votey and Perkins. The UVM site license for Mathematica allows you to install the software on any personal computer to which you have access. Directions on how to install it on your machine can be found at http://www.uvm.edu/~cems/mathstat/?Page=mathematica/install.php&SM=mathematica/_mathicamenu.html

There is a free screencast which has been developed to get new students up to speed with Mathematica 7 in just a few minutes, available at
    Hands-on Start to Mathematica .

  • GETTING HELP: In addition to office hours where you can (indeed, are encouraged!) to come talk to me, there are help and tutorial sessions available from the Mathematics Department. The schedule for these sessions can be found at
    Help Sessions.

  • MISCELLANEOUS: Students are expected to observe appropriate codes of conduct. UVM policies and procedures can be found at: Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities and Code of Academic Integrity

Students have the right to practice the religion of their choice. Each semester students should submit in writing to their instructors by the end of the second full week of classes their documented religious holiday schedule for the semester. Faculty must permit students who miss work for the purpose of religious observance to make up this work.

Students requiring special accomodations must make arrangements within the first two weeks of class.
