A new approach for an embedded image codec based on the wavelet
transform (WT) and auto-adaptive block coding of binary
position information is presented. The method, which treats
subbands independently is simple and efficient. Experimental
results show its performance to be close to that of the zero-tree
codec even without further entropy coding. In addition, the codec
is scalable with no corresponding implementation loss of coding
efficiency.
