The landscape of Iceland is young, by geological standards.  The mountains have been created by valcanos and earthquakes and have not had time to erode.  Thus, the edges of the mountains are very abrubt and steep.  This creates a perfect situation for waterfalls.  Both of these waterfalls are along the south shore.
