Goals: To learn the key methods and concepts of commutative algebra through problem-solving.

Text: "Introduction to Commutative Algebra," by Atiyah and MacDonald. Other useful references are "Commutative Algebra with a View Toward Algebraic Geometry," by Eisenbud, "Abstract Algebra," by Dummit and Foote, "Commutative Algebra," Volumes I and II by Zariski and Samuel.

Homework: I will assign weekly homework for your fun and profit by posting it on the homework page. Problem sets will normally be due on Monday at the beginning of class.

Class Participation: Students will be assigned to present specific problems in class. I am available to consult with you to be sure you are ready to present your problem.

.Final Assignment: There will be a final problem set during Final Exam week.

Course Grades: Your presentations in class, taken all together, will count as two homework sets. The final problem set will be worth two regular problem sets. Your course grade will be based on the weighted average of homework, class participation, and the final assignment, following traditional standards for the course.

Expectations: Please consult the  "Student responsibility" section of the UVM catalog for the classroom code of conduct and policy on attendance.  The UVM academic integrity policy  is in effect, as always. In particular, always be sure to give proper attribution for work or ideas that are not your own.

Special Needs: If you are eligible and need an accomodation, please inform me and provide appropriate documentation during the first two weeks of class so that this can be implemented.
